The City of Tampa's Solid Waste and Environmental Program Management Department marks the first anniversary of its Yard Waste Program, having composted over 20 million pounds of yard waste. This initiative, in partnership with Veransa Group, has transformed local yard waste into nutrient-rich compost and mulch for regional distribution.

The program aims to reduce landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions while optimizing space at the McKay Bay Waste-to-Energy plant. It also supports water conservation efforts by enhancing soil moisture retention during dry months.

Last summer, 150 residents benefited from a community compost giveaway. The next event is scheduled for April 25 and 26. Residents can apply via tampa.gov/water.

Mayor Jane Castor stated, "In alignment with our Climate Action and Equity Plan, composting our yard waste is a big step toward creating a more sustainable Tampa."

Residents are reminded to adhere to guidelines when placing up to four cubic yards of yard waste curbside. Landscaping companies must remove all waste from their work sites.
