The Tampa Police Department has apprehended a 72-year-old man in connection with a case of aggravated animal cruelty leading to the death of a dog. The incident occurred on February 12, 2025, when a witness reported seeing the suspect driving a green Ford truck with a dog tied by a leash to the vehicle's rear along the 4200 block of W. Kennedy.
Officers from the Tampa Police responded and discovered the dog had suffered severe trauma. Investigations revealed that the suspect drove approximately one mile with the dog being dragged behind. Surveillance footage showed that upon turning into a bank parking lot, the force caused the dog to become detached from its leash.
After parking, the suspect reportedly used an ATM and then fled, leaving the injured dog behind. Hillsborough County Animal Services arrived and transported the animal for emergency treatment at a veterinary facility, where it succumbed to its injuries.
Johnnie Davis was identified as responsible for this act and was arrested at his home on February 13, 2025. He faces charges of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and has been taken to Orient Road Jail.
"The cruelty inflicted on this helpless animal is both heartbreaking and unacceptable," stated Chief Lee Bercaw. "Our officers acted swiftly to ensure this criminal was identified and taken into custody. We will continue to seek justice for innocent lives and hold those responsible accountable."
The investigation remains active, with further details expected as they become available.
