Tampa, FL - The Tampa Police Department will hold a memorial ceremony to honor Officer Norris Epps, Jr., who died in the line of duty 30 years ago. Chief Lee Bercaw and the Tampa Police Command Staff will join the Tampa Police Memorial Committee for this event.
Officer Epps lost his life on January 18, 1995, during a search and rescue mission for a missing firefighter in Old Tampa Bay. The helicopter carrying Officer Epps and pilot Dan Gilligan crashed into the water. Officer Ed Bowden bravely entered the bay using his squad car's back seat as a flotation device to rescue Pilot Gilligan. Unfortunately, Officer Epps did not survive.
The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 11:30 am outside Tampa Police Headquarters at the Monument to Fallen Officers. It will include a tribute by the Tampa Police Honor Guard and participation from members of the Tampa Police Aviation Unit alongside Officer Epps' family.
