Tampa Police have arrested Derrick Smith, 30, on murder charges following a fatal shooting on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place in the 1000 block of Century Park Drive.
Officers responding to the scene found a 32-year-old male victim who had died from gunshot wounds. It was confirmed that the victim was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Witnesses reported that they heard gunshots and saw Smith shoot the victim multiple times before kicking him and fleeing. No evidence suggested an altercation between Smith and the victim before the incident. Investigations revealed that the victim did not approach closer than three feet to Smith when shots were fired.
Smith and the victim were acquainted through their work in post-hurricane cleanup efforts. The motive for this act remains unclear as witness accounts and evidence contradict Smith's initial self-defense claim.
Chief Lee Bercaw stated, "This senseless act has taken the life of a young man, and our thoughts are with his loved ones as they navigate this difficult time." He added, "Our detectives worked swiftly and thoroughly to positively identify and arrest the suspect, and we remain committed to ensuring that he is held accountable for his actions."
Detectives have recovered a firearm from Smith's vehicle, which has been impounded as part of the investigation. Smith faces murder charges and is currently detained at Orient Road Jail.
