The Tampa Police Department is responding to widespread online speculation surrounding a recent death investigation that has sparked numerous inquiries to police departments in Florida and Texas.
The department typically refrains from releasing news on suicide investigations to protect the privacy of affected families. However, due to circulating misinformation regarding this case, officials deemed it necessary to provide accurate details and address the potential harm caused by unverified online claims.
On November 16, 2024, officers responded to a call about a deceased male in a wooded area near a hotel on W. Kennedy Blvd. The body was identified as 21-year-old Ernesto Mederos. The investigation found no signs of foul play or trauma.
Detectives discovered that Ernesto had traveled from Texas to Florida, informing his family he would be assisting with hurricane relief efforts. His family had reported him missing in Texas. Evidence, including the Medical Examiner’s report, confirmed Ernesto died by suicide.
"The Tampa Police Department extends our heartfelt condolences to Ernesto’s family and friends during this difficult time."
Authorities stress the importance of avoiding misinformation online, which can have serious consequences for grieving families. They encourage the public to verify information before sharing it on social media platforms.
