Tampa, FL. (November 6, 2024) - On November 1, Tampa Police responded to a shooting report on the 1700 block of E. Hillsborough Ave at around 3:42 am. Officers found a Hispanic male in his early 60s with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and survived after receiving medical treatment.

The victim, who is still hospitalized and recovering, told investigators that he did not know the shooter or the reason behind the attack.

During the investigation, police identified a suspect as Michael Shaheen, a 28-year-old white male born on May 16, 1996. A suspect vehicle, a 2007 silver Honda Accord, was also identified. Authorities obtained a court-authorized warrant to search this vehicle.

On November 5 in the evening, officers were surveilling the Honda at 915 E. 20th Ave when Shaheen got into the car and drove away from his residence before returning home shortly after. As he pulled into his driveway, officers initiated a felony traffic stop due to its connection with the shooting incident and aimed to seize the car under the search warrant.

Shaheen refused multiple commands to exit his vehicle. Consequently, Tampa Police SWAT team was called in to apprehend him using negotiations and less-than-lethal methods.

Despite over three hours of negotiation attempts by SWAT members while Shaheen remained barricaded inside his car, communication eventually ceased. Upon cautiously approaching the vehicle afterward, SWAT members discovered Shaheen had suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He was transported by Tampa Fire Rescue to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injury.
