The City of Tampa has introduced its first Eco-Counter display at the intersection of North Boulevard and West Cass Street. The Eco-Counter is a digital unit equipped with camera sensors that count pedestrians and bicyclists in real-time, displaying daily and annual totals.
The device aims to promote a healthy lifestyle and serves as a tool for monitoring usage patterns along the Green Spine. "By tracking the Eco-Counter data, we can monitor usage patterns and trends in this area," stated city officials. The rising counts are intended to encourage more people to use bicycles instead of cars.
Tampa currently offers over 130 miles of bike facilities, with additional projects like the upcoming West Riverwalk and Green Spine extensions set to expand this network. These projects aim to connect more than a dozen neighborhoods with safer streets, sidewalks, and protected bicycle lanes. The administration's M.O.V.E.S. Plan prioritizes safe and equitable transportation options to create a healthier, safer, and more connected city.
Similar Eco-Counter devices are used in major cities across the United States and in 55 countries worldwide. The data collected by these devices is accessible online at https://eco-display-map.eco-counter.com/.
