Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Laurel Lee (FL-15) has been appointed by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson to the newly established House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI). In a statement, Rep. Laurel Lee expressed the importance of AI innovation and the need for Congress to stay proactive in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by AI technologies. She stated, "Artificial intelligence is a cornerstone of innovation, allowing us to advance far beyond any limits of human capability. Because of quick advancements in AI, it is important for Congress to remain diligent and plan for complexities to keep a competitive edge."
The Task Force aims to ensure that the United States maintains its leadership in AI innovation while also addressing potential threats to national security. Rep. Laurel Lee expressed gratitude to Speaker Johnson for entrusting her with this responsibility, saying, "I look forward to working with my colleagues in a bipartisan way to promote policies, standards, and resources that will benefit and protect Americans while continuing to support innovation in AI."
The Task Force, which will collaborate with relevant congressional committees, is tasked with producing a comprehensive report that includes guiding principles, forward-looking recommendations, and bipartisan policy proposals. The team will be jointly led by Chair Jay Obernolte (CA-23) and Co-Chair Ted Lieu (CA-36).
In addition to Rep. Laurel Lee, twenty-three other Congressional members have been appointed to the AI Task Force. The members include a diverse group of representatives from various states, each bringing unique perspectives and expertise to the table. The appointed members are listed as follows:
