"Our thoughts are with the little girl who was injured in this senseless act," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "Our Victim's Advocate will be working closely with the family to ensure they are connected to any resources they may need."
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when Tampa Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 3000 block of N. 50th St. Preliminary investigation revealed that Jackson, driving a 2013 white KIA Optima, got into a roadway altercation with the occupants of a 2014 white Chevy sedan. Jackson then fired a gun at the occupants of the Chevy, striking the 4-year-old girl who was sitting in the rear seat.
Fortunately, the child was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. The other occupants of the Chevy, including an adult female driver, an adult male passenger, and another child passenger, were unharmed.
Following the incident, Jackson fled the scene. However, officers were able to locate the suspect's vehicle near 56th St. and E. Hillsborough Ave. at approximately 7:42 pm. They successfully stopped the vehicle and arrested Jackson without incident. During the arrest, a gun that had been thrown from the Optima was also recovered.
Jackson is currently being detained and was interviewed by detectives. Final charges are yet to be determined.
The Tampa Police Department expressed their gratitude to the officers involved for their quick response, stating that their actions prevented further harm to the community. They also assured the public that they would continue to work diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
