Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa is set to distribute its 1500th bicycle as part of the Bikes from the Heart initiative. The program, which collects and refurbishes used bicycles for those in need, will present the milestone bike this Friday at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on North Florida Avenue.
Danielle Ritchie, a resident of the Tampa Hope Homeless Shelter, will receive the bicycle. "It might seem small, but a bike can make a huge difference," said a spokesperson for the church. Ritchie plans to use it to search for employment and attend medical appointments.
Bikes from the Heart was established in 2023 by parishioners Tim Eves and Tom Henry. Operating out of Sacred Heart's North Campus property, it aims to refurbish and redistribute at least 1000 bicycles annually. The program receives donations from individuals, local churches, apartment complexes, and partners like WellBuilt Bikes.
The City of Tampa's Mobility Department supports this mission as part of its efforts to improve safety and connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians through projects like new bike lanes and improved crosswalks.
For volunteering or donation inquiries, contact co-founders Tim Eves and Tom Henry via email at bikesfromtheheart@gmail.com. Donations can be delivered to their location on North Florida Avenue during specified hours.
