Tampa, Florida – A grand jury has indicted Jason Peterson, a 29-year-old resident of Parrish, on two counts of possessing firearms as a convicted felon. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg. If found guilty, Peterson could face up to 15 years in federal prison for each count. The indictment also indicates that the United States plans to seize three firearms: a Smith & Wesson, a Bauer, and a Rossi.
The indictment details that between July 1, 2024, and November 16, 2024, Peterson allegedly possessed both the Smith & Wesson and Bauer firearms. Additionally, on October 24, 2024, he is accused of possessing the Rossi firearm. Prior to these incidents, Peterson had been convicted of several felonies including resisting an officer with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer twice. These convictions prohibit him from owning firearms or ammunition under federal law.
It is important to note that an indictment is simply a formal accusation of legal violations and does not imply guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise in court. The investigation into this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Jeff Chang will be prosecuting the case.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which unites various levels of law enforcement with communities to combat violent crime and gun violence. Launched on May 26, 2021, PSN's strategy emphasizes community trust and legitimacy while supporting organizations that aim to prevent violence before it occurs.
