Daniel Diaz Garcia, a contract postal carrier from Jacksonville, Florida, has admitted guilt to charges of credit card fraud and mail theft. United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the plea. Garcia could face up to 10 years in federal prison for the credit card fraud charge and up to 5 years for the mail theft charge. He is also required to pay restitution to his victims. His arrest took place on July 29, 2024, by the U.S. Postal Service – Office of Inspector General (USPS-OIG), though a sentencing date remains pending.
Court documents reveal that Garcia began his role as a highway contract carrier in September 2023, tasked with First Class mail delivery in Jacksonville. During this time, he engaged in stealing mail and extracting its contents, including credit cards. The USPS-OIG investigation found that Garcia had taken credit cards from several victims along his route. Surveillance footage captured him using these stolen cards to buy over $1,000 worth of goods. When questioned by law enforcement about his activities with the stolen cards, another stolen credit card was discovered in his possession.
The case is being handled by the United States Postal Service – Office of Inspector General and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein.
