In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Tampa residents are focusing on recovery efforts. To support these communities, the Tampa Police Department has stepped up patrols in areas most affected by the storm.

The department has assigned officers to the hardest-hit neighborhoods to assist residents and prevent criminal activity. During a state of emergency in Tampa, there are increased penalties for crimes such as burglary and theft if they are related to the storm.

For an incident to be classified as looting, property must be taken from inside a structure or its enclosed area with intent to steal. This does not apply to items left at the curb for disposal. Any crime facilitated by conditions like power outages due to Hurricane Helene is subject to enhanced penalties.

“We are committed to keeping our community safe in the post-storm recovery,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “The last thing people need to worry about is protecting their property. We’ve assigned officers to increase patrols in these areas and are here to support our community with our goal of being safer, together."

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities via the non-emergency line at (813) 231-6130 or call 911 in case of emergencies.
