The second annual Memorial Park Cemetery Clean-Up is scheduled to take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 18. More than 75 volunteers have registered for the event and will be tasked with cleaning headstones, distributing flags, and picking up trash. The Parks and Recreation Department will provide all necessary supplies.
A ceremony honoring those interred in the cemetery is slated for 9 a.m. Memorial Park Cemetery serves as the final resting place for over 1,000 veterans. The cemetery, which features the only known Florida Negro World War Veterans Memorial, was established in the early 1900s. The City of Tampa purchased Memorial Park in May 2023.
The event is being organized by several groups including Vietnam Veterans of America, Military Order of the World Wars, the International Association of Firefighters, Friends of the Belmont Heights Memorial Park Cemetery, The Cemetery Society, and the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation.
