The City of Tampa has announced new and updated aid programs for business owners affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. The initiatives include grants, extended interest-free loans, and assistance for self-employed individuals in Florida.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, in collaboration with American Express, has introduced the Small Business Hurricane Recovery Grant Program. This program aims to support small businesses impacted by the hurricanes by providing $5 million in funding. Eligible businesses can receive $5,000 grants to aid their recovery efforts and enhance resilience against future disasters. To qualify, businesses must be located in SBA disaster-declared counties, have suffered financial harm preventing them from covering costs, and employ between 1-25 people. Applications are open until November 17 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Additionally, the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program has been expanded to offer interest-free loans for up to 24 months. These short-term loans are designed to provide working capital during the period between a disaster's impact and securing longer-term recovery funding from other sources.
Self-employed Floridians who have experienced damages or losses due to the hurricanes may also seek assistance from FEMA. Eligible residents include artists, musicians, mechanics, and independent contractors residing or working in FEMA-designated counties following Hurricanes Milton, Helene, or Debby. Assistance covers replacing essential tools and equipment necessary for self-employment that are not provided by an employer.
An inspection is required to assess damage to essential tools or materials. Applicants should report any such damage on their FEMA application and inform inspectors during evaluations.
