On May 12, 2024, just before 3:00 a.m., the Tampa Police Department initiated an investigation into a fatal shooting that took place in the 500 block of S. Howard Ave. According to preliminary findings, it appears that the three individuals involved knew each other and had interacted prior to the incident. A dispute among these three adult males reportedly escalated, leading to shots being fired.

At the time of the incident, officers assigned to the SOHO area were already on site as part of crowd dispersal and egress duties. No officers were injured during the event, and no additional injuries to bystanders were reported.

Tragically, two individuals lost their lives due to injuries sustained in the shooting. These victims have been identified as Kenneth Washington (B/M; 01/15/1996) and Kevon Christmas (B/M; 10/11/2000). Their next of kin have been notified. A third victim remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police detectives are actively working to identify the suspect involved in this incident. "My thoughts are with the loved ones impacted by this violence, especially on a day like today," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "Our officers, detectives, and crime scene technicians have been working tirelessly to gather any available evidence and leads in this case."

As detectives wrap up their on-scene investigation, all roads in the SOHO area have reopened. Employees are returning to businesses in the area and parking lots are expected to open shortly.

The Tampa Police Department encourages anyone with information that could assist detectives in their investigation to call them at 812-231-6130 or submit an anonymous tip via Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 800-873-8477 or by texting SAFETAMPA to Tip411 (847411). Additional updates will be provided when available.
