The City of Tampa is set to receive significant federal funding for a crucial flood mitigation project in South Tampa. U.S. Representative Kathy Castor has secured nearly a million dollars for the initiative, aimed at addressing the area's stormwater challenges.
Mayor Jane Castor will be present alongside Representative Kathy Castor to announce the funding on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. The $959,752 allocation will contribute towards the construction of a new stormwater pipe along a section of South Manhattan Avenue.
The project comes as a relief to residents of the highly urbanized residential area, which currently lacks a proper stormwater system and frequently faces street flooding. The new stormwater pipe, measuring just under a mile long, is a crucial component of the Manhattan Stormwater Project. It is designed to enhance drainage efficiency and reduce flooding risks in the region.
With an estimated total cost of around $11 million, the project is currently in the design phase. Construction is anticipated to commence later in 2024, with completion scheduled for spring 2026.
This federal funding marks a significant step towards enhancing the resilience of South Tampa against flooding incidents, providing much-needed relief to the local community.
