Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Laurel Lee (R-FL) took the opportunity to question Attorney General Merrick Garland about the Department of Justice's (DOJ) abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) during the Judiciary Committee Hearing titled "Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice."
FISA, which is set to expire at the end of this year, has been at the center of controversy due to documented abuses by the DOJ. Specifically, concerns have been raised about Section 702 of FISA, which allows the government to conduct surveillance on foreign individuals residing outside the United States without obtaining a warrant.
Congresswoman Laurel Lee (R-FL) expressed her concerns during the hearing, shedding light on the need for oversight and accountability within the DOJ. She stated, "The abuses of FISA by the Department of Justice are deeply troubling. We must ensure that the rights and privacy of American citizens are protected while still allowing for legitimate surveillance of foreign threats."
During her questioning, Congresswoman Lee pressed Attorney General Merrick Garland on the steps the DOJ is taking to address these abuses and prevent future misconduct. She emphasized the importance of striking a balance between national security and civil liberties.
As the debate surrounding FISA continues, it is crucial for lawmakers to address the concerns raised by Congresswoman Lee and other advocates for transparency and accountability in government surveillance practices.
