Washington, D.C. – On June 14, 2023, Congresswoman Laurel Lee (R-FL) questioned former DHS acting Secretary Chad Wolf and former Chief of U.S. Border Patrol, Rodney Scott at the Homeland Security Committee Hearing entitled, “Open Borders, Closed Case: Secretary Mayorkas’ Dereliction of Duty on the Border Crisis.”
“It is undeniable that we have a national security and humanitarian crisis at our southern border. Under Secretary Mayorkas’ leadership at the Department of Homeland Security, the number of illegal border crossings has reached a record high. Many of these crossings are by unaccompanied alien children or UACs,” said Rep. Laurel Lee. “These children are vulnerable to trafficking, exploitation, and other forms of abuse. Just last month, we saw the heartbreaking loss of a migrant child who arrived in the U.S. without a parent or guardian, and died in federal custody in Safety Harbor, Florida, not far from my district.”
Rep. Lee continued, “Tragedies like these are unacceptable and preventable. This hearing will shine a necessary light on how the actions and decisions made at DHS have facilitated this crisis so that we can better understand how Congress can bring accountability and put an end to this suffering and loss.”
