From March 21, 2023 post.

After the Tenant’s Bill of Rights was voted down, I was proud to bring it back for another vote before Tampa City Council.  This law was a pivotal civil rights law that prohibited discrimination in housing on the basis of income origination. Upon reconsideration, this law unanimously passed Council and is now the law of the land in Tampa.

Now, special interests in Tallahassee are looking at passing a law that prevents Tampa and other local governments from enforcing and having such laws.

This is a typical but still shocking attack on local laws that protect the civil rights and dignity of people who all too often do not have a voice.  We are in the middle of a housing crisis where rents have gone up 40% over the last year. Tenants need all the protections they can get.

Tallahassee seems to be more concerned with creating culture wars than they are with helping every day people. And in this instance, they are looking at passing a law that will actually hurt people. I am proud to work with both Republicans and Democrats to advance good public policy, but what I see in Tallahassee is always disheartening and not representative of the more moderate, collegial and collaborative Florida I know.
