Downtown High-Rise Fire Drill Utilizes Cutting-Edge Technology to Test Emergency Preparedness

Ruraled

City of Tampa issued the following announcement on Mar. 4.

Strategic Property Partners, in conjunction with the City of Tampa, Tampa Fire Rescue, Massey Emergency Management and Cushman & Wakefield, will be conducting a state-of-the-art high-rise firefighting exercise at the center of one of the country’s most dynamic new urban developments, Water Street Tampa on Saturday, March 5, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The fire simulation will involve realistic conditions and closely mimic an actual incident and will include both fire attack and search and rescue components.

“Residents should not be alarmed if they see a significant Tampa Fire Rescue presence on Water Street Saturday morning because it’s just a training exercise that will help our department’s readiness,” said Tampa Fire Chief Barbara Tripp. "This is just another way we continue to train our firefighters to use the latest technology to respond in a wide range of emergency situations."

Strategic Property Partners engaged Massey Emergency Management, a leader in the life safety field for commercial real estate, to conduct this fire drill at Thousand & One, downtown Tampa’s newest trophy office building in Water Street Tampa. In addition to prioritizing important safety protocol at the building, the drill will provide valuable emergency planning insight for the benefit of the entire neighborhood. Thousand & One was chosen due to its advanced building system technology and non-work hours of tenants over the weekend.

“Water Street Tampa is utilizing innovative technology to create the best possible experience for our tenants and visitors,” said Lee Schaffler, Chief Portfolio Officer for Strategic Property Partners. “A major focus of that innovation is on the building and life safety systems that can help us prepare for emergencies, which is why we brought Massey and Tampa Fire Rescue to the table.”

For 35 years, Massey Emergency Management has been coordinating training drills with the largest urban departments in the country – at no cost to the host cities. The company’s dynamic safety solution includes its revolutionary and newly upgraded mobile application, which has been effectively tested in drills with leading first responder agencies in the U.S including Tampa Fire Rescue. The department hosted a similar exercise with Massey in 2016 and with the latest drill keeps it at the leading edge of first responder agencies utilizing new technologies to save lives and reduce property losses.

“An essential element of emergency incidents involves moving data from the Command Post to staff and first responders at the center of the crisis,” said Curtis Massey, President of Massey.  “Having just released the new Massey App, we’re excited to put it to the test and showcase its ability to support rapid, informed response by building management and FD personnel.”
