The City of Tampa is notifying residents about the mailing of Substantial Damage Assessment Letters following the impact of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The city conducted visual assessments to determine damage within flood hazard areas, identifying structures that require substantial damage determinations prior to any remodeling or improvements.
"Substantially damaged means the cost to repair your house or business is more than half of its value," explained Development and Economic Opportunity Administrator Abbye Feeley. "If it is substantially damaged, it cannot be repaired without meeting current floodplain and building code requirements."
Residents receiving a letter are advised to complete the attached Substantial Damage Determination form. This step is crucial if their structure has been deemed substantially damaged, as they may need to elevate their home or flood-proof their business.
Those who have already applied for repair permits would have completed this form during the permit process. Compliance with federal law through this determination ensures Tampa's participation in the National Flood Insurance Program, offering reduced flood insurance premiums.
Administrator Feeley will address media inquiries on Monday morning, December 9, at 11:30 a.m. at City Hall regarding these letters and subsequent steps for residents.
