The City of Tampa is marking Women's History Month by acknowledging the contributions of women in its solid waste department, an area traditionally led by men. This recognition comes after a difficult hurricane season and highlights the women maintaining Tampa's cleanliness.
Mayor Jane Castor emphasized the importance of women's contributions: "In every city department, women have made their mark and contribution in countless ways to Tampa's growth and success. This month, we want to take a moment to honor the women in our Solid Waste Department, especially those out in the field, boots on the ground, making a difference in our community."
The city introduced its "Fabulous Five" from the solid waste team:
- Richele Jenkins is recognized as the first woman automated side loader driver for Tampa.
- Trekina Hall plays a key role as a committed driver within the city's waste collection system.
- Christine Matthews operates as a tractor-trailer and special equipment operator at McKay Bay Transfer Station.
- Emani Johnson and TaNesha Jones serve as service attendants ensuring efficient operations.
These five women are celebrated for their resilience and skill within this essential industry. According to 2020 data from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), only 1% of U.S. solid waste workers were women. By 2022, this figure rose to 13.7% among truck drivers.
Tampa aims to enhance opportunities for women in solid waste through competitive pay and advancement prospects. Director Larry Washington stated, "This field offers a path to success for those ready to take the wheel. We encourage women across Tampa to explore careers in solid waste and join our Fabulous Five in paving the way and shaping the future of this industry."
Media representatives are invited to attend a press conference with ride-along opportunities featuring these drivers on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
