In Tampa, the anticipated 30th Annual Tampa Police Memorial 5K/1-Mile Run-Walk has been postponed due to Hurricane Milton. The event was originally set for Saturday, October 12, 2024. The decision to delay the run was announced by the Tampa Police Department Memorial Committee.
Chief Lee Bercaw commented on the postponement, stating, “The Tampa Police Memorial Run is a cherished tradition that honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community.” He emphasized that despite the postponement caused by Hurricane Milton, their commitment to honoring fallen officers remains strong. Chief Bercaw highlighted that the department's priority is community safety during and after the storm.
Deputy Chief Ruth Cate, President of the Tampa Police Memorial Committee, added, "The Tampa Police Memorial Run holds a special place in the hearts of our community and for the families of fallen officers." She assured that rescheduling plans are underway with public safety as a priority. Deputy Chief Cate reiterated their dedication to honoring fallen officers even amidst challenges posed by Hurricane Milton.
A new date for this year's run will be announced later. As preparations continue for Hurricane Milton's arrival, residents are urged to take precautions and follow safety instructions.
The annual event aims to honor fallen Tampa Police officers while fostering community spirit. It usually includes a 5K run and a 1-mile fun run/walk along with food, music, door prizes, and various activities. Proceeds support initiatives like the Tampa Police Museum and Memorial Scholarship Program.
