The City of Tampa is preparing for the expected impact of Tropical Storm Helene, which is forecasted to affect the Tampa Bay area by Thursday. The city is focusing on water, stormwater, and wastewater systems as part of its proactive measures.

Efforts are being made to monitor critical infrastructure and drainage systems to mitigate potential roadway flooding due to heavy rainfall. The city encourages residents to help minimize strain on the wastewater system by reducing water usage before and during the storm. This can help lessen the risk of wastewater overflow during periods of rapid and heavy rainfall.

Residents are advised to conserve water by limiting non-essential use in the days leading up to and during the storm. They should also check irrigation system settings ahead of time to ensure sprinklers are turned off or adjusted to avoid unnecessary water usage. Over-saturating lawns can lead to property flooding and add challenges to stormwater management.

For those looking to stock up on water, there is no need to purchase single-use plastic bottles. Instead, residents can prepare their own supplies by storing tap water in clean, food-grade containers or reusable bottles. Each family should store at least one gallon of water per person per day for a minimum of three days.

To safely store your own water:

- Use food-grade containers that have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

- Fill containers with tap water ahead of the storm.

- Store containers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight or heat.

- Replace stored water every six months to ensure it remains fresh and safe.

The city advises residents to stay informed, prepared, and safe by signing up for alerts at Tampagov.net/AlertTampa or texting TAMPAREADY to 888-777 (TAMPALISTA for Spanish alerts). Following @CityofTampa on social media will provide news affecting the city. Residents should also know their evacuation zones and flood zones ahead of the storm and complete their emergency supply kits for family and pets. More preparedness tips can be found at tampa.gov/hurricane.
