TAMPA, FL. (June 21, 2024) -- Tampa Police officers responded to a report of an apparent domestic-related assault in the 4000 block of West Hillsborough Avenue at approximately 2:20 am.

Witnesses provided a detailed description of the suspect. A community member who witnessed the assault attempted to intervene before officers arrived. The first officer on the scene located the suspect and attempted to question him. The suspect refused to obey commands and attempted to re-enter the vehicle where the female victim was present. The suspect then tried to flee on foot, disregarding the officer's lawful commands to stop.

The officer deployed his taser, and a vehicle traveling eastbound on Hillsborough Avenue struck the suspect and continued without stopping.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

This incident is classified as an in-custody death because the officer was attempting to make an arrest when the suspect was hit by a car.

In accordance with a mutual aid agreement, FDLE will lead the investigation into this in-custody death. The Tampa Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit is working to identify and locate the vehicle that struck the suspect and fled.

An internal investigation will be conducted to ensure that all department policies and procedures were followed by the officer involved.

"Our Victim’s Advocate will work with the female victim in this case. Thankfully her injuries were non-life-threatening."

Eastbound traffic along Hillsborough Avenue will be closed between Lois Ave and N. Dale Mabry Highway for the investigation.

This remains an active investigation, with updates made available as circumstances allow.
