Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed his gratitude for the efforts that led to the arrest of a suspect involved in a series of laser strikes targeting commercial aircraft approaching Tampa International Airport. Chief Bercaw emphasized the seriousness of the incidents, stating, "These laser strikes are not only illegal but also incredibly reckless behavior that could have resulted in a tragic accident."
The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Douglas Sollenberger, was apprehended by Tampa Police Officers after being observed pointing a laser directly at an incoming Jet Blue flight. The pilot of the aircraft confirmed being struck by the laser, highlighting the potential danger posed by such actions.
John Tiliacos, TPA Executive Vice President of Operations, commended the collaborative efforts of Tampa Police and the FBI in ensuring the safety of aircraft, passengers, and crews. Tiliacos emphasized the importance of community support in maintaining aviation safety, stating, "Never point a laser at an aircraft!"
Sollenberger has been charged with Misuse of a Laser Lighting Device and taken into custody. The swift action taken by law enforcement serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of endangering aircraft through laser strikes.
