The City of Tampa has introduced new regulations for the use of shared eScooters and eBikes within the city, effective as of April 1st. Riders are now required to park their e-vehicles exclusively in designated docking stations to avoid being charged an "out-of-hub fee."
According to the announcement, each vehicle will come equipped with software to guide riders on where they can and cannot park. Failure to comply with the new rules may result in penalties imposed by the operating company, with fees potentially reaching up to $5.
In a bid to incentivize compliance, riders who discover misplaced vehicles are encouraged to return them to a docking station. As a reward, the operating company may offer a credit to the rider's account, with credits ranging from 50 cents to $2.50, depending on the company.
The docking stations, known as corrals, will be clearly marked and include electronic virtual corrals, public bike racks, scooter racks, and charging stations spread throughout the city. Residents can suggest additional corral locations through an interactive website provided by the city.
The implementation of these new rules aims to declutter sidewalks and address safety concerns associated with misplaced micro-mobility vehicles. Additionally, specific areas such as the Tampa Riverwalk, Bayshore Blvd., 7th Ave. in Ybor City, Hyde Park Village, and Armature Works have been designated as off-limits for shared micro-mobility vehicles.
Riders are reminded to adhere to all traffic laws, yield to pedestrians, ride solo, and avoid riding under the influence of alcohol. By following these guidelines, the city hopes to foster a safe and efficient micro-mobility program for all users.
