On December 27, 2023, Chief Lee Bercaw announced the implementation of Operation Countdown to Safety, a New Year's Holiday safety operation aimed at ensuring the well-being of the Tampa community during this festive season. The operation will involve an increased police presence and focus on removing impaired drivers, addressing celebratory gunfire, and encouraging the public to report any suspicious activity.

Chief Lee Bercaw emphasized the importance of this operation, stating, "Careless actions will be a fast track to welcoming the new year in handcuffs. Through Operation Countdown to Safety, we’re ensuring that our community welcomes 2024 safely and not at the cost of someone else’s life." He also highlighted the significant number of DUI arrests made by Tampa Police officers in 2023, which stands at over 1,500.

With numerous events and a large influx of visitors expected in the city for New Year's festivities, including the bowl game, the officers are committed to ensuring the safety of the roads by keeping intoxicated and reckless drivers off them. The collaborative effort between the officers and the community is crucial in maintaining a safe environment for all.

To achieve a tragedy-free New Year's celebration, the Tampa Police Department has provided some essential tips for the community to keep in mind during the holiday weekend. These include avoiding drunk driving by finding a sober designated driver or utilizing ride-share services. Chief Lee Bercaw emphasized that "buzzed driving is drunk driving" and that the risks associated with a DUI are not worth taking.

Additionally, the Tampa Police Department has urged the public to refrain from celebratory gunfire as it poses a significant risk to others. Chief Lee Bercaw stated, "Bullets do not defy gravity. Celebratory gunfire is reckless and puts dozens of others at risk, potentially causing serious injury or death. Fireworks should be the only things lighting up the sky, not bullets."

Respecting speed limits is another crucial aspect of the Operation Countdown to Safety. Chief Lee Bercaw emphasized that adhering to speed limits ensures the safety of everyone on the roads, allowing them to reach their destinations without incidents.

Lastly, the Tampa Police Department encourages the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling the non-emergency number or informing a nearby officer. This active participation from the public plays a significant role in helping officers maintain a safe environment. In case of emergencies or immediate threats to public safety, dialing 911 is advised.

Operation Countdown to Safety aims to create a secure and enjoyable environment for the Tampa community as they welcome the new year. By raising awareness about the risks associated with impaired driving, celebratory gunfire, and reckless behavior, the Tampa Police Department hopes to prevent any unnecessary tragedies during this festive season.
