The suspect involved in a fatal shooting on December 17, 2024, at a residence on West Saint Joseph Street has been apprehended. Derrick Dempsey, born November 29, 1989, faces charges of first-degree murder.

"This is a tragic loss that no family should have to endure," stated Chief Lee Bercaw. "We are thankful this dangerous individual is no longer on the street and for the partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office that led to a quick arrest in this case."

The incident occurred shortly before 5:45 am when Tampa Police responded to reports of gunfire at the St. Joseph Street location. Officers found an adult white female in her mid-30s with a gunshot wound and administered life-saving measures. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Witnesses informed police that Dempsey had been arguing with a woman known to him inside a pickup truck. They reported seeing Dempsey exit the vehicle, strike the victim, and retrieve a gun before hearing a shot fired.

With assistance from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Dempsey was arrested without incident, and authorities collected the shotgun involved.

"This dangerous and calloused criminal showed no regard for human life," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "But thanks to the strong partnership between the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Tampa Police Department, we were able to bring this individual into custody. We are proud to provide the assistance and assets needed to support our partners in keeping our community safe."

The investigation remains active, with additional details forthcoming as they become available.
