Tampa has reported significant water savings, closing the year with nearly two billion gallons conserved. This achievement follows the implementation of once-a-week watering restrictions that began on December 1, 2023, as a response to drought conditions. In August 2024, the City Council approved an ordinance to maintain these restrictions year-round to help manage water resources.

Over the past year, Tampa's average daily water use decreased by approximately 5.5 million gallons compared to the previous year. The city's main water source is the Hillsborough River, from which the Tampa Water Department is permitted to withdraw up to 82 million gallons per day (MGD) annually. If demand exceeds this limit, additional water must be purchased from Tampa Bay Water, potentially increasing customer bills and stressing regional supplies.

The Tampa Water Department offers several programs aimed at promoting efficient irrigation and reducing water consumption. These include irrigation evaluations, conservation kits for indoor and outdoor use, workshops both in-person and online, Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM guides and resources, as well as information on Tampa Bay Water Wise Rebates.

Customers participating in irrigation evaluations have saved an average of 5,000 gallons monthly—equivalent to hundreds of dollars in annual utility savings. Residents interested in these programs can email SaveWater@tampa.gov or visit tampa.gov/WaterSavingDevices for more information.

The department continues to encourage efficient water usage among residents and businesses while providing details about watering restrictions at tampa.gov/WaterRestrictions.
