Congresswoman Laurel Lee has announced Colonel Orlando Rodriguez as the 2024 Veteran of the Year for Florida's 15th District. The announcement highlights Col. Rodriguez's extensive military service and contributions to the community.
"Colonel Rodriguez’s service and leadership have left a remarkable legacy on our community and nation," said Rep. Laurel Lee. "His impressive background coupled with his undeniable admiration and dedication for our great nation make him a deserving recipient of Florida’s 15th District’s Veteran of the Year award."
Col. Rodriguez, originally from Havana, Cuba, has had a distinguished career in the United States Army spanning nearly three decades. He fled Cuba in 1959 but returned as part of Brigade 2506 during the Bay of Pigs invasion. After spending two years in a Cuban prison, he was released to the United States and joined the US Army in 1963.
Throughout his military career, Col. Rodriguez served multiple combat tours in Vietnam with both the 1st Cavalry and 82nd Airborne Divisions. He also served as one of President John F. Kennedy's Green Berets and advised Presidents George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan.
He is recognized as one of the most decorated Hispanic soldiers in U.S. history, having received honors such as the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, and two Bronze Stars.
The Veteran of the Year Award recognizes veterans from Pasco, Polk, or Hillsborough Counties who demonstrate commitment to their community, excellence in spirit, and support for fellow veterans.
