As storm repair efforts intensify, the City of Tampa is urging residents to remain vigilant against contractor fraud and price gouging. This warning comes as the city, along with neighboring areas, remains under a State of Emergency following recent storms.
The city emphasizes that while supply and demand dynamics may lead to some price hikes, essential commodities should not see significant price increases during such emergencies. Essential items include lumber, generators, gas, shelter, and services like tree removal or roofing repair. Any suspected price gouging can be reported to the Attorney General’s Price Gouging Hotline at 1-866-NO-SCAM or 1-866-966-7226.
Homeowners are advised to avoid hastily choosing expensive repair options. Once insurance coverage is confirmed for repairs, it is recommended to obtain at least three estimates and verify that chosen contractors are licensed and insured via floridalicense.com. Contractors should also be bonded to ensure homeowner protection if contractual obligations are unmet. It is advised against paying the full repair cost upfront; large deposits should raise caution.
To ease the repair process burden, Tampa is waiving fees on certain damage permit applications related to hurricanes Helene and Milton. The fee waiver applies to permits for roof repairs over 500 square feet, electrical activities related to storm damage, garage door replacements, HVAC mechanical change-outs, hot water heater changes, exterior door replacements, wall repairs or replacements under alteration permits, and demolition permits due to storm damage.
Q-Up Tampa provides virtual appointments for permits and plan review consultations with Construction Services staff. More information on repair work resources can be found at tampa.gov/construction-services.
