The City of Tampa has introduced a virtual appointment system, "Q-Up Tampa," to assist residents with hurricane recovery permits following the impact of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. This initiative allows residents to consult with Construction Services staff remotely using a computer or smartphone.
"This allows our residents to show us virtually -- over Facetime or another type of video call -- what was damaged in their home, so that our Construction Services team can provide advice on what needs a permit and what can be done," explained JC Hudgison, the City of Tampa's Chief Building Official.
Certain repair activities do not require building permits. These include drywall repairs up to two feet from the floor, roofing work under 500 square feet, and various interior finish works such as painting and tiling. Fence repairs, soffit and fascia repairs, and exterior door replacements also fall under this category.
To alleviate repair burdens, the city is waiving fees for storm-related damage permit applications linked to Hurricanes Helene and Milton. This waiver applies to specific trade permits like roof repairs exceeding 500 square feet, electrical work related to storm damage, garage door replacements, HVAC changes, hot water heater changes, and multiple exterior door replacements. Building permits for wall alterations or demolitions due to storm damage are also included.
Additionally, the city offers expedited permit reviews for these types of permits in compliance with state statutes.
For more information or assistance regarding hurricane recovery permits within Tampa city limits, residents can contact the city's office at 306 East Jackson Street or call (813) 274-8211.
