Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Laurel Lee (R-FL) released a statement following her appointment to the Bipartisan Task Force to Investigate the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump.

“On July 13, 2024, the American people witnessed a catastrophic security failure that nearly resulted in the loss of President Trump’s life. The United States Secret Service has a no-fail mission to protect America's leaders, and unfortunately, they failed at their core mission that day," said Rep. Laurel Lee. "One of Congress's constitutional responsibilities is to conduct oversight to provide accountability and transparency, and that is exactly what this task force will do. I would like to thank Speaker Johnson for entrusting me to be a member of this task force and I look forward to working with my colleagues to investigate these inexcusable security failures to ensure this never happens again."

The Task Force holds all investigative authority of the House of Representatives, including subpoena power. It will oversee all pending House committee investigations related to the Trump assassination attempt for the remainder of this Congress.

The objectives of the Task Force are threefold: understanding what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination, ensuring accountability, and preventing such an agency failure from recurring. The Task Force will recommend reforms for relevant government agencies and propose necessary legislation.

Republican members include Chairman Rep. Mike Kelly (PA-16), who authored the resolution creating the Task Force; Rep. Mark Green (TN-07), Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee; Rep. David Joyce (OH-14), former Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security; Rep. Laurel Lee (FL-15), member of Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees; Rep. Michael Waltz (FL-06), member of Intelligence, Armed Services, and Oversight Committees; Rep. Clay Higgins (LA-03), member of Homeland Security and Oversight Committees; and Rep. Pat Fallon (TX-04), member of Oversight and Armed Services Committees.

Democratic members include Ranking Member Rep. Jason Crow (CO-06), member of House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and House Foreign Affairs Committee; Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46), senior member of House Judiciary and House Homeland Security Committees; Rep. Madeleine Dean (PA-04), member of House Judiciary and House Foreign Affairs Committees; Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), member of House Armed Services Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; Rep. Glenn Ivey (MD-04), member of House Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Ethics Committees; and Rep. Jared Moskowitz (FL-23), member of House Oversight and Accountability and Foreign Affairs Committees.
