The City of Tampa is awarding up to $100,000 to eligible homes in need of critical repairs as part of its ongoing effort to address the affordable housing crisis. The initiative, known as the Healthy Homes Program, is funded by a $1.9 million federal grant and aims to assist at least 90 households.

Monie Davis, an East Tampa homeowner, is currently receiving assistance through this program. Her home repairs began with a new roof in June after experiencing severe water damage due to a leak. Over the next few months, contractors will replace drywall, baseboards, and cabinets in water-damaged areas and work on her HVAC system, hot water heater, gutters, smoke detectors, among other repairs. The city will cover over $98,000 for these repairs.

“Helping families remain in their existing homes is a part of our affordable housing initiative,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “It is our hope that we can give homeowners peace of mind while the program’s funding takes care of expensive repairs that will ensure the longevity of these homes.”

The U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department provided a grant totaling $1,999,560 for this initiative, matched by $1 million from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The funds must be used within a specified timeframe. To qualify for assistance, applicants must reside in the City of Tampa, occupy their home, and meet income requirements (up to 80 percent Area Median Income).

“This program aims to assist individuals with limited incomes in making necessary repairs," said Kayon Henderson, City of Tampa’s director of Housing and Community Development. "We are eager to receive new applications to proceed with repairs for families in the upcoming year."

While contractors are working on several homes already approved for renovations under this program, the City continues to seek new applicants. The funding period lasts fifteen months with a deadline set for August 2025.
