A Lake County woman has pleaded guilty to a significant drug offense involving methamphetamine. Tonya Lynn Romero, 37, from Okahumpka, admitted to possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it. The United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced that Romero could face a prison sentence ranging from five to forty years. Her sentencing is scheduled for April 10, 2025.

The case unfolded following a narcotics interdiction operation at Orlando International Airport. During this operation, law enforcement utilized a canine unit which detected drugs in a suitcase checked under Romero's name. Upon taking possession of the luggage, Romero consented to a search by law enforcement officials who discovered over 13 kilograms of methamphetamine inside.

The investigation was carried out by Homeland Security Investigations and the Orlando Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Megan Testerman is prosecuting the case.
