Tampa Solid Waste Driver, David Llanos, has been commended for his exceptional act of kindness and quick thinking in assisting a distressed mother in finding her wandering toddler. Llanos was recently presented with the prestigious Life Changer Award by Mayor Jane Castor and the City of Tampa Solid Waste Department for his brave actions on March 19, 2024.
Solid Waste Director Larry Washington expressed his admiration, stating, "I could not be prouder of David Llanos for noticing something was wrong and stepping in to help." Washington highlighted how Llanos' actions exemplify the team's commitment to the community and underscore the essential role they play as first responders.
Llanos' swift response not only brought relief to the worried mother but also averted the need to involve the Tampa Police. The City of Tampa Solid Waste Drivers undergo annual training, such as the See Something, Say Something program provided by the Tampa Police Department, to enhance their vigilance and alertness during special events and collection routes.
The recognition of David Llanos' heroic deed serves as a reminder of the dedication and compassion exhibited by individuals within the City of Tampa's service sectors.
