TAMPA, Fla. (April 30, 2024) -- One hundred and seventy-five years after Tampa's incorporation, the city is undergoing the biggest infrastructure overhaul in its history. Mayor Jane Castor emphasized the importance of this period in Tampa's history, stating, "When historians write about this era of Tampa history, they will tell our grandchildren this was a period when city leaders fully understood infrastructure is the lifeblood of any city."

The city has been focused on rebuilding its foundation to pave the way for economic growth and prosperity. The Progressive Infrastructure Planning to Ensure Sustainability (PIPES) Program, a nearly $3 billion initiative, aims to address critical repairs and upgrades to Tampa's aging water and wastewater systems. Mayor Castor expressed pride in the city's progress, noting, "We are making monumental progress, rebuilding Tampa's foundation."

Over the past five years, Tampa has invested more than $800 million in upgrading its water and wastewater systems, with an additional $250 million allocated to stormwater projects. Approximately 300 miles of pipes have been repaired or replaced, and new facilities and technologies have been introduced to enhance operations and efficiency.

Jean Duncan, Administrator of Infrastructure and Mobility, commended the current administration for its comprehensive approach to improving the city's quality of life. Duncan stated, "I have never worked for a mayor who focused on improving Tampa's quality of life on so many fronts at the same time."

The infrastructure overhaul extends beyond water systems to include road improvements, solid waste management, and the development of new city facilities. Tampa's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure is evident in projects such as the retrofit of the McKay Bay Waste-to-Energy Plant, the construction of the City Center at Hanna Avenue, and the ongoing extension of the West Riverwalk.

With numerous projects still in the pipeline, the City of Tampa encourages residents and stakeholders to stay updated on social media for the latest developments. The city's dedication to progress and innovation underscores its commitment to building a stronger foundation for the future.
