Tampa Police Make Arrests in Reckless Driving After Intersection Takeover

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed his firm stance on the recent reckless driving incident that led to arrests in Tampa. Bercaw stated, "The reckless behavior of those involved in this type of activity is completely unacceptable." The incident involved a group of individuals blocking an intersection in Tampa, engaging in reckless driving and lighting fires.

The Tampa Police Department swiftly responded to the reports on the morning of March 16, 2024. Officers from the Tampa Police Aviation Unit observed the situation from a helicopter, providing real-time updates to ground officers. The officers attempted to stop a green Ford Mustang involved in the reckless driving, which eventually led to a safe apprehension at a 7-Eleven on N. MacDill Ave.

The individuals involved in the incident were identified as 24-year-old Anwar Yasser Awdi and 19-year-old Jawad Yasser Awdi. Anwar Yasser Awdi was charged with Unlawful Racing on a Highway and Fleeing to Elude an Officer, while Jawad Yasser Awdi was charged with Unlawful Racing on a Highway. The Mustang driven by the individuals was impounded.

Chief Bercaw emphasized the dangers of such activities by stating, "This type of street takeover not only puts participants at risk but also creates a dangerous situation for innocent motorists and pedestrians in our community." The police department is actively investigating the incident to identify any other individuals involved in the illegal activity.
