The Tampa Police Department Black History Committee has announced its partnership with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) to host the Annual Black History Walk for Education & HBCU Homecoming Festival. This event aims to celebrate Black History Month and raise funds for educational opportunities for students.
UNCF, with its 80 years of experience, has played a significant role in assisting nearly half a million students in earning college degrees. Chief Lee Bercaw of the Tampa Police Department expressed his excitement about collaborating with UNCF, stating, "This is another opportunity to partner with our community for programs that benefit youth. I am excited to join forces with an organization like UNCF for an event that helps children navigate the path to success."
In addition to the walk, the Tampa Police Department will be awarding scholarships to five deserving high school students during the event. Deputy Chief Calvin Johnson emphasized the importance of these scholarships, saying, "These scholarships will allow us to make a positive impact on students heading into the next chapter of their lives. We must all do our part to help our youth be successful. We are thankful to the sponsors who helped make this happen."
The 2024 Black History Run/Walk for Education & HBCU Homecoming Festival is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 10, 2024. The event will be held from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at Perry Harvey Park, located at 1000 E. Harrison St, Tampa, FL 33602.
This event not only provides an opportunity to celebrate Black history but also encourages individuals to come together to support educational opportunities for young students. It is a testament to the commitment of both the Tampa Police Department and UNCF in investing in the future of the community.
