Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, Florida is set to undergo its largest replanting in six years. The replanting, which will begin today and last for up to two weeks, aims to rejuvenate the landscaping along the boulevard. This comes as a response to the damage caused by a recent storm surge and the subsequent high salt levels in the soil.

Typically, Bayshore Boulevard's landscaping receives small changes and ongoing plantings as needed. However, the recent storm surge in December 2023 led to prolonged flooding from Hillsborough Bay. As a result, the salt from the water caused significant damage to the plants along the boulevard.

"We delayed the replanting from the storm to allow time for the salt to move out of the root zone through natural rain and reclaimed irrigation water," said Ken Akins, the Horticulturist for the City of Tampa. "The timing of the delay worked out with the Gasparilla parades as well."

The replanting will consist of a variety of full-sun perennials, annuals, and low-growing shrubs. It is expected that these new plantings will reach maturity in approximately one month, providing a refreshed and vibrant landscape for Bayshore Boulevard.

This replanting effort is a testament to the city's commitment to maintaining and enhancing the beauty of Tampa's iconic boulevard. It showcases the dedication of the City of Tampa to ensure that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy the scenic views and greenery along Bayshore Boulevard.

As the largest replanting in six years, this project demonstrates the city's efforts to preserve the natural environment and maintain the aesthetic appeal of one of Tampa's most beloved landmarks. The replanting will not only improve the visual appeal but also contribute to the overall health and vitality of the plants along the boulevard.

Residents and visitors can look forward to seeing the transformation of Bayshore Boulevard's landscaping in the coming weeks. The replanting will bring new life to the area, creating a welcoming and picturesque environment for all to enjoy.
