The Tampa Police Department arrested two suspects involved in the shooting that took place on N Dale Mabry Highway last week.
At approximately 9 p.m. on April 27, 2023, the suspects followed the victims from W Boy Scout Boulevard toward the location of the shooting, in the 1700 block of N Dale Mabry Highway near I-275. When the victims’ vehicle stopped at the red light, the two suspects fired multiple rounds into the victims’ car, striking two of the four occupants. At this point, the suspects fled from the scene. One victim was treated at a local hospital and has since been released. The other victim remains in the hospital and is in serious condition at this time.
Through investigative means, the suspects were identified as Jaquone Penny, 26, and Myron Griffin, 23. Both were arrested and face charges of First Degree Premeditated Attempted Murder with a Firearm, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, and Shooting Into a Vehicle. Griffin also faces a charge of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
This was a targeted act and not a random act of violence.
“These suspects put not only the lives of their victims in danger but also all those who were traveling on this always busy roadway,” said Interim Chief Lee Bercaw. “I applaud the diligent work of our detectives to get these two off our streets and they are working to identify any other possible persons of interest in this case. I urge anyone who may have seen or heard something related to the shooting, to please come forward with that information.”
The investigation is ongoing at this time. Additional updates will be provided via a press release from the TPD Public Information Office.
