The Tampa Water Department is hosting a half-day event for 30 high school students in the ninth grade from King High School to learn about construction and water quality at the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Plant.
This STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) event will be held at the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Facility as well as the Hillsborough Dam.
Students will get a tour of the Hillsborough Dam, learning how this smart piece of engineering was designed in part as a flood control measure. Students will also learn how the Tampa Water Department proactively lowered the Hillsborough River Reservoir by 2.5 feet over the course of three days when it looked like Hurricane Ian was heading straight for Tampa.
Following the tour, the students will work with engineers in completing a Water Quality Challenge with Jacobs, the firm overseeing much of the work taking place at the Tippin Water Treatment Plant.
