Congratulations to the 2022 Firefighter of the Quarter for the fourth quarter, Captain Eddie Ortiz.
Stationed at Station 3, on the A-platoon, Captain Ortiz has been a member of Tampa Fire Rescue for the last 16 years.
Captain Ortiz is respected by all as a passionate company officer who leads by example; consistently looking to improve himself, his personnel, and Tampa Fire Rescue. Despite having an impressive career with Tampa Fire Rescue, his ability to mentor and lead others is not solely as a result of his fire service education and experience: characteristics which he displays frequently such as loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage were ingrained in him long before his presence with Tampa Fire Rescue, while leading men in combat operations as a sergeant in the Marine Corps deployed to Iraq.
During his enlistment as marine, he also obtained a brown belt MMA instructor certification, which was used to lead mixed martial arts instruction for infantry companies. His experiences in the Marine Corps have influenced his career not only as a leader, but also with his involvement in special assignments within Tampa Fire Rescue, most of which are on a voluntary basis. He is a member of the Honor Guard, where he serves as an ambassador of our profession and represents our department as a highly disciplined team member at events, ceremonial functions, and with respect and dignity at funeral services. He’s a member of the Peer Fitness team, our Firefighter Interview panel, as well as being certified as a hazardous materials technician, marine operations, Florida USAR rope technician, and International Association of Firefighters Fit to Thrive personal trainer, just to name a few.
Congratulations on being recognized by the Tampa City Council.
