The Tampa Theatre's Black Love classic movie series, created in 2022 with the City of Tampa’s Community Engagement & Partnerships Department, continues to celebrate the intersection of Valentine's Day and Black History Month. This year, the series is expanding to include stories from "Blerd" culture, which stands for "black nerds," highlighting heroes who inspire creativity and imagination.
The event, presented by Tampa Electric (TECO), will showcase films every Sunday in February. The lineup includes "Black Panther," a Marvel film featuring T'Challa as he defends Wakanda; "Fast Color," a drama about a woman with supernatural abilities; Jordan Peele's "Nope," which combines horror and social commentary; and "Hidden Figures," depicting three Black women mathematicians at NASA.
John Bell, President & CEO of Tampa Theatre, stated: “Movies have the unique ability to turn an intimately personal story into a shared experience. Watching a movie as a group with other members of your community invites conversation. It gives us the space to compare our own experiences with what we see on the screen and find those emotions that connect us as human beings.”
Tickets for the series are priced at $10 ($7 for Tampa Theatre Members) and can be purchased at the Franklin Street Box Office or online.
Additionally, attendees are encouraged to donate art supplies for Project Return’s Art Program, supporting individuals with severe mental illnesses through creative expression.
The series is sponsored by TECO in collaboration with the City of Tampa’s Community Engagement & Partnerships Department.
