The Tampa Police Department responded to an incident at Freedom High School on January 31, 2025, following a student's report of a possible weapon on campus. The student reported their concerns to a teacher, who then informed the School Resource Officer.

The individual in question was found carrying a cell phone case designed to look like a handgun but did not pose any threat to the school or individuals. "We understand that news like this is deeply concerning and can cause anxiety for parents and the entire community," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "Thankfully, in this case, there was no active threat. We appreciate the swift action of the student and teacher in reporting this concern. Their actions are a testament to the importance of ‘See Something, Say Something.' We urge all parents to take this opportunity to talk with your children about school safety, what is appropriate to bring to school, and the importance of reporting anything that seems suspicious."

In response to the report, multiple officers were deployed to Freedom High School, including members from the Tampa Police Aviation Unit. The school entered “Lockout” status while officers conducted a comprehensive search of both the campus and surrounding area.

The investigation remains ongoing with potential charges forthcoming as more information becomes available.
