In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which have caused significant property damage across Florida, the City of Tampa is cautioning residents about potential contractor scams. With a high demand for qualified contractors following such disasters, there is concern over unlicensed or out-of-state workers exploiting those in need of repairs.

Residents approached by individuals offering repair services are advised to verify licenses through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) at myfloridalicense.com. The Florida Attorney General’s Office has provided several guidelines for hiring contractors:

- Ensure that any repair work will be covered under your insurance policy by having an insurance company evaluate the damage before proceeding with repairs.

- Obtain at least three written, itemized estimates on bids or repairs.

- Be cautious of unsolicited offers or contractors claiming to offer discounted repairs using leftover supplies from other jobs.

- Research a company's reputation online or ask friends for references. Verify if a company is licensed and insured, and check for consumer complaints against them through the DBPR or by contacting the Florida Attorney General’s Office at (866) 9NO-SCAM.

- Confirm that a contractor is bonded and verified with a bonding agency.

- Thoroughly read contracts before signing to ensure they include cancellation rights and understand any penalties for cancellation.

- Insist on releases of liens from all subcontractors before making final payments to avoid unexpected liens on your property due to unpaid suppliers or subcontractors.

Homeowners are also warned against paying full repair costs upfront and should be wary of large deposits. Final payment should only be made once satisfied with the completed work.

Additionally, Florida's Disaster Contractors Network (DCN) has been activated to assist homeowners needing emergency home repairs. This free resource connects homeowners with licensed contractors and suppliers for necessary services. Homeowners can visit DCNOnline.org to find local licensed contractors based on their county.

For further inquiries, residents can contact the City of Tampa at 306 East Jackson Street, Tampa, Florida 33602, or call (813) 274-8211.
