The City of Tampa is finalizing its preparations as Hurricane Milton approaches the Southwest Florida coastline. Sandbag distribution sites have closed after providing approximately 115,000 sandbags over four days. Parks and Recreation staff worked to pre-pack sandbags and maintain efficient lines.
A significant concern before the storm was the debris left by Hurricane Helene. The city managed this through teamwork among Solid Waste workers and other departments, ensuring regular collection services and increased debris removal in heavily affected areas. Over two weeks, more than 26,000 cubic tons of debris have been collected, with efforts continuing today.
The Mobility Department has extended free parking at all city-owned public garages until midday Friday. Residents, especially those with electric vehicles, are advised to move their cars to higher ground due to past incidents where floodwater contact caused fires in electric vehicle batteries during Hurricane Helene. While downtown garages fill up, Ybor city-owned garages still have available space.
As the storm's effects intensify this evening, residents are urged to stay indoors and find safe locations until it passes. First responders will be unable to respond to calls until conditions improve.
