As Tropical Storm Milton nears the Gulf, Tampa is offering free parking in city-operated garages for residents in flood-prone areas. This initiative, effective from Sunday, October 6 to Thursday, October 10 at 5 PM, is particularly aimed at electric vehicle (EV) owners due to their increased vulnerability to flood damage.
Electric vehicles face significant risks if exposed to floodwaters, which can cause electrical malfunctions and even fires. To mitigate these dangers, Tampa encourages residents to use upper-level parking in city garages.
Mayor Jane Castor stated, “Our goal is to help all residents, especially electric vehicle owners, avoid the dangers associated with flooding. Parking in the upper levels of our garages can help reduce the likelihood of water damage, and we encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity.”
The available parking locations include Fort Brooke Garage on N. Franklin St., Twiggs Street Garage on E. Twiggs St., Centro Ybor Garage on E. 5th Ave., Palm Fernando Garage on N. 13th St., Pam Iorio Garage on Channelside Dr., Whiting Garage on S. Florida Ave., Tampa Convention Center Garage on E. Brorein St., and William F Poe Garage on N. Ashley Dr.
Residents are advised that parking will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis and should park EVs on the third floor or higher. Vehicle owners park at their own risk and should lock vehicles and remove valuables as precautions.
Garages will return to normal operations after 5 PM on October 10 unless affected by storm conditions; standard fees apply for vehicles left beyond this time.
